Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): What Is It?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based approach that helps people change their relationship with difficult thoughts, emotions, and experiences, rather than trying to eliminate them. Many individuals seek therapy not because something is “wrong,” but because old strategies for coping are no longer working. ACT offers a way forward that focuses on living well, even when life is hard.
ACT is commonly used to support anxiety, depression, chronic stress, burnout, trauma responses, and ongoing self-criticism.
What ACT Focuses On
ACT is grounded in the idea that emotional pain is a normal part of being human. Struggling to control or avoid difficult inner experiences can often make things feel more restricted or exhausting over time.
Instead of asking “How do I get rid of this?”, ACT asks:
What matters to me?
How do I want to show up in my life?
What gets in the way of that?
The work focuses on building psychological flexibility - the capacity to stay present, respond with choice, and take meaningful action even when things feel uncomfortable.
How ACT Works in Therapy
ACT uses a combination of practical strategies, reflective exercises, and experiential work to help you:
Notice thoughts as thoughts, rather than facts that must be obeyed
Make room for emotions without being overwhelmed by them
Reconnect with values that give your life meaning
Take small, intentional steps toward the life you want to live
Sessions are collaborative and paced. The focus is not on “fixing” you, but on helping you relate differently to internal experiences so they no longer dictate your behaviour or limit your life.

What to Expect From ACT
ACT therapy begins with understanding your current patterns, pressures, and values. From there, sessions focus on building awareness, flexibility, and meaningful action over time.
Change in ACT is often gradual and sustainable. Rather than waiting to feel better before living, ACT helps you start living in ways that matter, while learning to carry difficult experiences with more steadiness and self-compassion.
Working Together
I offer in-person sessions in the inner Western suburbs of Melbourne, or telehealth across Australia.
If you’re curious about whether ACT might be right for you, I’d welcome the opportunity to talk it through. You’re welcome to book a 15-minute consultation or ask any questions before committing to anything.
